TRANSITION PLANNING

It is best to have a comprehensive plan prepared well in advance

Preferably, succession planning begins several years before the envisioned transition of leadership. While firm decisions are usually not made in advance, it is imperative that consideration be given to providing experiences, training, coaching and opportunities to potential leaders in the nexgen. Given that societal norms are shifting at a rapid pace, consideration must be given to the likes, desires, personal preferences and personal goals of potential leaders.

OPTION DEVELOPMENT

There may be more than one way forward

Finding consensus on the best option is an iterative process.  It is imperative that the goals and objectives of both the exiting generation and nexgen be articulated and addressed.  Ultimately we want to design a strong team; one capable of driving the business to the next level of performance, not the best group of individual contributors, so consideration to team dynamics must be considered in assigning roles and responsibilities.

MAPPING THE CHOSEN PATH

A Comprehensive Approach

Once a path forward has been agreed a plan is developed with timelines, milestones, action steps, etc. to ensure that the transition is acted upon timely and deliberately. This aspect of the process requires a strong project leader to hold all accountable to the commitments that have been made.

We usually think of project control as getting people to do certain things, and that’s true here as well, but there are likely to be actions that require some family members to do fewer things or work less; if the senior generation has difficulty dialing back, the nexgen will be unable to fully take control. Once again, a seasoned consultant will be able to identify this challenge and effectively find solutions.
